 2018 Preview

Monroe County finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Monroe County finished seventh in Class 4A region one with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Tigers have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2003 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Tigers last playoff victory came during the 2003 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

Monroe County was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Tigers want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.4 points a game.

Since 2010, the Monroe County football program has struggled with a record of 20-60.

Over the past 25 seasons, Monroe County has not won much with a record of 64-180. Their 26.0% winning percentage ranks 55th in Class 4A and 357th in the AHSAA.

The Tigers will be under the direction of new head football coach Marshall Locke as they enter the 2018 season.

The Monroe County Tigers will play in Class 4A region one during the 2018 season. The Tigers have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 72-49 last season. That ranks 8th in Class 4A and 35th in the AHSAA. Monroe County will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season.

Region one will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. It will be an uphill battle for the Tigers if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region one this season.

Unfortunately, Monroe County plays in a region with the likes of Andalusia, Clarke County, Hillcrest Evergreen and UMS-Wright making it more difficult to claim one of the playoff spots. The Tigers will need to find a way to upset one of those teams and win another three region games to have any chance at the post season.

The Tigers open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent J.F. Shields on Friday, August 31 at Panther Field (The Pit). Last year the J.F. Shields Panthers finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 1A region one.

Monroe County and J.F. Shields have met a total of 36 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 32-4-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2017 with Monroe County winning by a score of 30-14.
